Thermochemical oxidation of methane by manganese oxides in hydrothermal sediments

چکیده

Abstract Microbial anaerobic oxidation of methane coupled to the reduction Mn(IV)-oxides, typically MnO 2 , derived from continental weathering and riverine transport has been proposed as a globally important sink methane. However, potential role hydrothermal Mn(IV) oxide-rich sediments sink, mechanisms underpinning at high-temperature fields remain poorly understood. Here, we report occurrence almost pure rhodochrosite with extremely negative δ 13 C PDB values (as low –76.4‰) in direct association hausmannite formed through activity Late Triassic Heqing Mn deposit Southern China. Based on detailed petrography geochemistry, this is interpreted result thermochemical by during early diagenesis. Given high 2+ CH 4 release sulfate concentration observed Archean oceans, propose that oxides may have effective sinks Earth’s ancient oceans.

Anaerobic methane oxidation in Black Sea sediments

Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) and sulfate reduction (SRR) were investigated in sediments of the western Black Sea, where methane transport is controlled by diffusion. To understand the regulation and dynamics of methane production and oxidation in the Black Sea, rates of methanogenesis, AOM, and SRR were determined using ra-5 diotracers in combination with pore water chemistry and stable...

Anaerobic methane oxidation in low-organic content methane seep sediments

Sulfate-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) is the key sedimentary microbial process limiting methane emissions from marine sediments and methane seeps. In this study, we investigate how the presence of low-organic content sediment influences the capacity and efficiency of AOM at Bullseye vent, a gas hydrate-bearing cold seep offshore of Vancouver Island, Canada. The upper 8 m of sed...

Manganese- and iron-dependent marine methane oxidation.

Anaerobic methanotrophs help regulate Earth's climate and may have been an important part of the microbial ecosystem on the early Earth. The anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) is often thought of as a sulfate-dependent process, despite the fact that other electron acceptors are more energetically favorable. Here, we show that microorganisms from marine methane-seep sediment in the Eel River B...

Oxidation of Phenol in Acidic Aqueous Suspensions of Manganese Oxides

-Phenol (benzenol) oxidation by three synthetic manganese oxides (buserite, manganite, and feitknechtite) has been studied in aerated, aqueous, acidified suspensions. The rate of reaction was pH dependent. Oxidation was greatly enhanced below pH 4, when diphenoquinone and p-benzoquinone were identified as the first products. Initial reaction rate was correlated with standard reduction potential...

Effects of temperature and pressure on sulfate reduction and anaerobic oxidation of methane in hydrothermal sediments of Guaymas Basin.

Rates of sulfate reduction (SR) and anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) in hydrothermal deep-sea sediments from Guaymas Basin were measured at temperatures of 5 to 200 degrees C and pressures of 1 x 10(5), 2.2 x 10(7), and 4.5 x 10(7) Pa. A maximum SR of several micromoles per cubic centimeter per day was found at between 60 and 95 degrees C and 2.2 x 10(7) and 4.5 x 10(7) Pa. Maximal AOM was ...
